I knew a Mexican girl who wanted to make a man love her. She went to a witch who sacrificed a chicken. She paid $200.
The witch went to the Chinese poultry store. She lit a circle of candles in the park at night. She cut the chicken’s neck with a razor. Murmuring incantations under the moon. Great spirits, take away what lies between them. The chicken thrashed around and bled out.
For months the girl woke up weeping. Wind clattering in the windows. The man lived in Miami. A thousand miles from her. He was a WASP who played polo. They met on Instagram. Talking and sharing pictures. He showed me who he really was, she said. He was the best man I ever knew.
He was engaged to another WASP. After they set a wedding date the girl didn’t hear from him. Two weeks before the wedding the fiancee was in a speedboat drinking. It flipped into a buoy at 40 knots. She was decapitated. The father killed himself. The mother went to a mental institution.
A month after that he finally DM’d her back. I love you. I miss you. I want to be with you. But she was over him by then.

Vancouver is a city of 2.6 million souls perched on the very edge of the North Pacific Ocean, just north of Seattle. The weather is rather pleasant. It can get a tad chilly in winter, but compared to Boston, where I believe you come from, it’s mild as all hell.
